Chiaroscuri: Ghost Works I

Chiaroscuri: Ghost Worksย was born from the desire to capture sonic snapshots, like photographs that freeze a unique moment in time. These collections will feature pieces mostly written in one or at most two voices, to highlight the instrument in its purest essence.
Each track is improvised to preserve the raw purity of instinct, with all its imperfections.

Drawing Shadows: Francis Gri & Wil Bolton NEW WORK

I am happy to share my new collaboration with Wil Bolton:

After Imaginary Tales and In Still Water, the collaboration between Wil Bolton and Francis Gri continues to explore new territories.ย
Unlike the first two works, where the initial framework was created by Wil, this time the roles have been reversedโ€”and surprisingly, the final result features sounds that are quite different from their previous efforts.ย
Drawing Shadow is a collection of six tracks (for a total of 38 minutes) that blends ambient textures with minimal electronics in a dense album that takes the duo into darker, yet still delicate, territories.ย
The sounds of this work transport the listener to that brief moment of the day when itโ€™s not quite night yet, but the soul begins to embrace a more intimate breathโ€”a breath in search of beauty, tranquility, and poetry, awaiting that moment of peace and calm before finally surrendering to dreams.

Bruma::::: reviews

It will become increasingly rare to hear me talk about reviews on this site, but I want to mention the few yet beautiful words that have been used, in different languages, to describeย Bruma. A heartfelt thank you to Mirco Salvadori, Philippe Blanche, Vito Camarretta, Franรงois Bousquet and Peppe Trotta.

Mirco Salvadori, Rockerilla

Vito Camarretta, Chain D.L.K: https://www.chaindlk.com/reviews/12710

Francis Griย composes like a dreamer who has never quite returned from sleep. His music lingers between wakefulness and slumber, unfolding like mist over frozen landscapes – each note a slow breath of condensation on a windowpane, each silence a space where memory curls in on itself.
With “Bruma”,ย Griย continues his exploration of delicate melodic textures and abstract soundscapes, weaving a sound world that is as fragile as it is immersive. This time, however, music alone does not tell the story. Included with the release is a short tale – one that gives “Bruma” an added weight, an aching, whispered narrative that mirrors the albumโ€™s slow, drifting movements.
“The story follows Bruma, a woman born without legs, who finds escape in dreamlike journeys to ethereal dimensions. But over time, the fire of imagination dims, and she becomes trapped in the barren world of reality – until, in her final days, she rediscovers a way back, dissolving into nature itself.ย Griโ€™s music is the soundtrack to this transformation, the passage from fleeting youth to disillusionment and, finally, to an acceptance that transcends both.
Musically, “Bruma” exists in a state of gentle suspension. Tracks like “Bruma I” and “Bruma III” stretch into vast, reverb-drenched spaces, where synth washes and distant echoes move like shifting fog. The album’s pacing is unhurried, inviting the listener to drift with it rather than chase after structure. “Bruma IV” carries a sense of weightlessness, while “Bruma VII” (the second one – because time is circular here) feels like the slow unraveling of a final thread, a long exhale into silence.
By choosing to work entirely with synthetic sounds rather than his usual field recordings,ย Griย crafts a world that feels detached from the physical, a realm of mirages and reverberations. The absence of found sound only heightens the sense of distance – this isnโ€™t music tied to any one place, but rather to the shifting, unstable landscapes of memory.
At its core, “Bruma” is a meditation on impermanence. It is the moment before snow melts, the hush of a room before someone speaks, the space between reality and a dream. And when it ends, it leaves you not with closure, but with the feeling of having briefly touched something just beyond reach – before it slipped, softly, into the mist.

Philippe Blanche, Igloo Magazine: https://igloomag.com/reviews/francis-gri-bruma

Owner of the labelย Krysalisoundย and trained musician in nostalgic form of semi-classical ambient musicย Francis Grioffers us one outstanding collection of precious-diaphanous, blurred out dream-like pieces, as suggested by the title of the album. Without being demonstrative but with simple, organic, and efficient articulation between timbres, tone colors and textures, Francis Gri paints a whole musical universe where evocative stillness is displayed thanks to a vast array micro-sounds, concrete manipulations, spoken words, detached echoing piano notes, and languid drone guitar chords seconded by other instruments. What characterizes his style is a taste for orchestral music with roots in fictional scores, could be indie cinema or simply environmental-historical documentaries with a poetical aura.Sustained chords eerily fixated doubled by gritty noises and slumbering waves of electronics develop in an exquisite and soul-restoring balm. Glitch-esque altered piano sequencesโ€”as in the second piece โ€œBruma IIโ€โ€”will lead you in a lovely garden of broken or rusty layers engulfed in immemorial time. Itโ€™s difficult to pick up one favorite piece as these remain inwardly connected to each others. Pale timbres and intangible forms are harmoniously intertwined with touching melodies for a cloudy evanescent spiritual departure from our turbulent immediate reality. If you enjoy Japanese-Zen ambient skeches from Yoshimura but also fragile modern-classical piano by Adrian Lane, Mike Lazarev, Tristan Eckerson, and Ben Lukas Boysen, you will easily be seduced by the cosy and minimalist sound paintings of Francis Gri. Francis Gri is the kind of sound artist whose work deserves to be discovered by a wider audience of ambient enthusiasts, seekers of tranquility, and those drawn to introspective, quiet moments at home. Much like an old friend,ย Brumaโ€˜s music offers comfort and solace, gently accompanying you through times of grief and personal reflection.

Franรงois Bousquet, EtherReal: http://www.etherreal.com/spip.php?article7032

Peppe Trotta, SoWhat: https://sowhatmusica.wordpress.com/page/2/

Il flusso รจ vaporoso, incline allโ€™onirico come spesso accade nelle proposte del musicista italo-svizzero. Modulazioni diafane intrecciate a materia granulosa in un insieme organico dalla consistenza tattile (Bruma I), scandito da stille di melodia sintetica a definire paesaggi affini allโ€™universoย 12kย

Sasayaka

Always fascinated by the “shortform editions,” Iโ€™m happy to present, after Lull, a new miniature album: Sasayaka.
Seven small musical seeds gathered in sixteen minutes. It might sound paradoxical, I know, but those who, like me, are used to few words might understand this pursuit of essence, of the bare minimum.
What surprises me every time I listen back to works like this is how time seems to expand: a few minutes that stretch out, reaffirming the idea that time, after all, is a relative concept.

Sasayaka is a sonic journey made of imperceptible details that dance in the air like light leaves. Ethereal sounds, delicate as the first light of dawn, tiny fragments of emotion suspended in time.
Each track is a caress, a breath, a distant echo that brushes against the soul. Sasayaka is a celebration of the hidden joy found in small things, a whisper capable of containing infinity.

Recorded during the nights between February and March 2025, on a 4-track cassette recorder.

Sette piccoli semi musicali raccolti in sedici minuti. Puรฒ sembrare paradossale, lo so, ma chi, come me, รจ abituato a poche parole forse comprenderร  questa ricerca dellโ€™essenza, del minimo indispensabile.

Bruma (NEW ALBUM)

After the minimalist interlude ofย Svanireโ€”a project that will certainly have a follow-upโ€”I am continuing to explore the compositional path I embarked on with my recent works,ย Argineย andย While. In this journey, I seek to strike a delicate balance between intricate melodic textures and expansive, abstract soundscapes, allowing each element to breathe and evolve organically.ย
The result is not just a collection of sounds but a true narrative experience: a soundtrack designed to accompany and enhance the atmosphere of a short story, which is included within the CD packaging. The music and the written word intertwine, creating an immersive dialogue between sonic and literary dimensions.ย
For those who wish to read the story, Iโ€™m sharing the link below to access the digital version. I hope this project resonates with you and invites you into its world, where music and storytelling merge into a singular, evocative journey.ย

Thank you, as always, for the time you dedicate to what I create with passion and love.

Svanire (NEW ALBUM)

Svanire, the Italian word for “vanishing,” is a 44-minute piano and electric piano suite, divided into four tracks that guide the listener through an intimate and reflective sonic journey. The work is minimal and skeletal in its essence, built around eloquent silences and fragile, almost suspended notes that evoke the melancholic hues of autumn. Each note seems to dissolve into the air, like leaves in the wind, creating an atmosphere of rarefied beauty.ย
The strength of this piece lies precisely in its simplicity, which never feels trivial thanks to the meticulous production by Andrew Chalk. With his unique and hypnotic touch, Andrew has brought to life a sound that amplifies and enhances the delicate nature of the compositions, enriching them with emotional depth. Every sonic detail is carefully crafted, creating a balance between emptiness and fullness, between sound and silence, making the listening experience unique and immersive.ย
Accompanying the music is a short story, a narrative that intertwines with the notes, creating a subtle dialogue between words and sound. The artwork, generously provided by Andrew Chalk, is not just a visual frame but a perfect representation of the atmosphere evoked by the album: an image that, like the music, seems toย dissolve and vanish, capturing the fleeting nature of the moment. The choice of colors and visual forms engages with the sonic tones, further enriching the overall sensory experience.ย
A special thanks goes to Daisuke Suzuki, who contributed the Kanji translation of the wordย Svanire, adding another layer of cultural and symbolic meaning to this work. The Kanji translation is not just a linguistic transposition but a bridge between cultures, reflecting the universality of the theme of vanishing and impermanence.ย

… autumn

I have always loved this time of year when, towards the end of September, we bid farewell to the summer heat and gently step into that path of multicolored leaves and minor chords that lead us towards the cold of winter.
Memories of the past resurface in my mind, when I still lived in the house in Pordenone. I see my mother, before she got sick, showing off the shawl she bought in her hometown, Edinburgh. I feel the first cold starting to penetrate the walls of the house and the basement set up as a sound studio that finally comes back to life with notes and resonances. I touch the tiles, finally cold, and smile because the first fog is near.
In the air, I perceive something special, a sort of preparation that has always attracted me. Not surprisingly, my soul is magnetically drawn to this season.
I am happy to soon present a work with these characteristics, with an autumnal and foggy mood. A delicate sound that leaves time to reflect and let oneself go between dream and melancholy. And as Radiohead would say, โ€œhow to disappear completelyโ€.

ย E come direbbero i Radiohead โ€œhow to disappear completelyโ€.

Waiting forโ€ฆ

After months of waiting, the rain that changes everything has finally arrived. These are different drops that mark the end of summer and lead us into autumn, my favorite season. Early in the morning, we already wake up in the dark, and slowly the house returns to a more livable temperature. It was a summer divided in two, pleasant until June and then very hot until a few days ago.

Slowly, I can complete the two works I finished in 2024. They will be called โ€œSvanireโ€ and โ€œBrusio dโ€™autunnoโ€ two autumnal works that I canโ€™t wait to share. Always for those who still want to follow my publications. I am becoming less and less social, and maybe one day I will even leave Bandcampโ€ฆ but this is just a thought that has been swirling in my head for a while, nothing concrete for now.

For now, I enjoy the coolness of the morning and those clouds in the sky so uncertain but full of autumn energy.

Le tissage des rรชves: Collaboration Album by Toร n & Francis Gri

I’m very happy to introduce my first collaboration with the French composer Toร n available now in digital and physical format.

When I approach a collaboration, I always feel a mix of curiosity and fear. Working remotely, it’s not easy to communicate your thoughts with your collaborator, and often the risk of misunderstandings or tensions can lead to ruining the simple initial idea of blending your musical worlds together.ย
In recent years, I’ve been fortunate to work with people who share the same way of experiencing music, and I must say that this new collaboration with Anthony Elfort is part of this positive trend. “Le tissage des reves” is the first collaboration with the sound of Toร n, whom I got to know by publishing his album Phonolite for Krysalisound in 2022. I consider Anthony one of the most talented musicians I have met so far, with an ability to create musical collages of infinite beauty and extraordinary compositions, and I feel extremely honored to have had the chance to enter his world.ย
It’s an album of a dreamy nature that blends electroacoustic, ambient, jazz, and electronic sounds in nine medium-length tracks to accompany the listener to those delicate and suffused territories that only dreams can offer.ย
I don’t know if there will be new chapters with Anthony in the future, but for sure, “Le tissage des reves” will remain for a long time among my most successful collaborations.

Release date: June 7, 2024ย

– All music by Anthony Elfort and Francis Griย
– Recorded between Cruguel (FR) and Milan (IT) in 2023-2024ย

Valley of Languages: Collaboration Album by Xu & Francis Gri

It’s a pleasure to announce my first collaboration with the Italian composer Xu (project of Nicola Fornasari).
“Valley of Languages” will be released on May 18 by the English label Whitelabrecs.

โ€˜Valley of Languagesโ€™ is the brainchild of these two musicians who, despite having never met in person, found themselves sharing and understanding the same musical space; which became the inspiration for the album title and its concept. This album is not just a collection of songs; it’s a collaborative exploration of diversity and emotional resonance. It serves as a metaphorical meeting point where diverse musical languages and techniques converge, creating a rich tapestry of sound that transcends geographical boundaries. This album comprises six tracks, each a testament to the harmonious collaboration between two minds separated by distance, but united by a similar way of seeing and perceiving things.
