This is the story of a tale, handwritten on a crumpled sheet of paper, ready to be cast into the burning ashes of a misshapen fireplace.
Perhaps it tells of an ancient tree that, over the years, has welcomed those who chose to abandon life. How many things it could tell, recounting the souls it greeted as anonymous pawns, embracing their sorrow within its wide arms, that silent rupture of those who chose to turn away from the world, caught between anger and suffering.
And perhaps this story could be written by a faceless man, one who faces each day by dragging himself through it, searching for the right mask to keep from falling. His is a silence swollen with archaic meanings, a silence no one has ever weighed.
At dusk, demons envelop his home. Every night a war, every morning a new life: to die and be reborn.
Reflections and shadows of a man who has never lived. An intertwining of images shrouded in charcoal hues, and a constant question that pulses beneath them. His is a smileless face, and with each awakening, using a fragment of charcoal, he sketches an outline of the face that might please those who live beyond his shell. Yet every time, there are jeers and sharp-edged stones. And every evening, a shadow winds the finely knotted rope around that weary oak, cloaking it in a bitter seduction.
Only one question, that very question, keeps him from letting himself be bound. And so, one day, on a morning without a number, once again with his face already drawn and ready to go out, he decides to erase everything and write down that question: why?
It is a muted question cast into an ocean of inert lies, yet slowly he becomes aware that something around him has changed. The walls become mirrors, and people turn into small, insignificant, faded strokes. And finally, in one of a thousand reflections, he manages to see a face, serene in its bearing, crying out his name through tears.
